Kinds of Support for Text-Based Writing

Today in class we learned about the MLA (Modern Language Association) and work citing. In the lesson we read an essay called "The Struggle to Be an All-American Girl" by Elizabeth Wong. The essay was about a Chinese Girl and the struggles she had with cultural identity. In a way I can relate myself to this girl because I was born a Chamorro, but the environment I grew up in was Americanized. Growing up my parents nor grandparents to the time to teach me the language of Guam and I spent majority of my education State Side. There are times where I regret not learning more about my culture because it is who I am.

  1. I have stayed on Guam my whole life, yet I still do not know the Chamorro language. My dad tries to teach me, but I think I sound funny so I don't practice it. I wish I was taught at a young age because it seems to stick as you get older. I have some friends that can speak the language fluently to their parents because that is how they were raised. When I hear it, it really sounds beautiful.
